E-Shield

  • E-Shield service scans all your incoming messages from outside the our network looking for known viruses and the tell-tale signs of junk email messages that traditionally clutter your mailbox.  Through a partnership with Postini Corporation all these messages are prescreened -- BEFORE they reach your inbox.  Viruses and junk email messages are safely rerouted to the E-Shield Message Center where they are held, giving you the chance to review them at your leisure.
How Does E-Shield Work?
Before messages are placed in your inbox, each one is scanned by the E-Shield service.  If a virus is detected the message is immediately moved to the E-Shield Message Center and a notification is sent to your inbox.  You can then click on a link that loads the Message Center in your browser, giving you the opportunity to safely review the infected message.  Viruses that don't spread via web pages can then be safely reviewed in your browser and then deleted.  Web-based viruses will simply display with a message indicating the problem.  The virus screening service has two settings:  On or Off.  The customer can configure the service to meet their individual needs.  By default the service is set to "On".

If the message passes the virus screening it is then screened for signs that it is a junk email message.  But how does E-Shield know if a message is "junk" or actually wanted by you?  After all, one man's junk is another man's treasure!

This is where the E-Shield service really shines!  E-Shield offers an extremely flexible screening process that can be controlled by each individual customer.  Customers may tailor their filtering preferences in four different ways to meet their individual needs.

Individual filtering preferences are configured by the user within the E-Shield Message Center configuration window.  The default settings filter all viruses and specify low sensitivity to junk email messages.  This means that initially all viruses known by the system will be blocked but most junk email messages will be sent through.  This lenient setting is important initially so that most messages are delivered.  We don't want customers missing important messages simply because they were inaccurately identified as junk email.  Customers are encouraged to visit the E-Shield Message Center shortly after their account is activated to customize the settings to meet their individual needs.

Sensitivity
The E-Shield service allows each customer to specify the level of sensitivity applied to the screening of their messages:  Lenient, Moderate, or Aggressive.

  • Lenient - FEWER suspicious email messages are directed to the Message Center
  • Moderate - MORE suspicious email message are detected, but errs on the side of delivering messages rather than directing to the message center.
  • Aggressive - MOST suspicious emails are detected in an attempt to keep your inbox as clean as possible, but this setting could direct valid messages to the Message Center.

Category
Junk email is categorized as one of five types:

  • Sexually explicit - Inappropriate sexually explicit messages
  • Get Rich Quick - Money making offers and high risk investments
  • Racially Insensitive - Insulting jokes and perspectives
  • Special Offers - "Too good to be true" messages that are often just that
  • Bulk Email - Commercially unsolicited email - these messages are automatically blocked by enabling junk email filtering

CategoryWithin the E-Shield Message Center configuration window customers are allowed to turn filtering on or off for the first four categories above.  Whereas some people may enjoy the "Get Rich Quick" messages others would rather block them.  Simply add or remove the check mark from each box within the configuration window to specify your own individual preference.  Screen shot

Explicit Approval or Blocking
There are some senders that you may wish to ALWAYS block or ALWAYS let through, regardless of the material contained in the message.  You can add individual email addresses or entire domains to either the "Blocked" or "Allowed" list to ensure the messages you need arrive but the ones you don't are blocked.  Note however that as long as virus protection is enabled viruses are ALWAYS blocked, regardless of who sends them.

So what is the E-Shield Message Center?
EShield1We have integrated the E-Shield Message Center into our WebMail service.  To access your E-Shield Message Center simply log into the WebMail service at http://webmail.huntel.net using your email address and your password.  After the WebMail window loads you can click on the "E-Shield" link on the left side of the page to access your E-Shield services.

Once you are viewing the E-Shield Message Center you will notice a "Junk Email" and a "Virus" link near the top of the page.  These links lead to the configuration window for each service.  Click on "Screen Shot" below to get a good view of the Message Center.
